Published in 1993, this monograph forms the first series of photographs by Nan Goldin within which people are absent. In this departure from her usual subjects, Goldin captures a series of vacant rooms, their interiors ranging from gaudy opulence to sordid squalor, presented alongside German poems by Joachim Sartorius. In many of the photographs a haunting emptiness accompanies the residuum of presumed human activity, conjuring an eerie presence that raises questions of who might inhabit such spaces.
