Joan E Biren – known as JEB – self-published her groundbreaking photography book Eye to Eye in 1979, and it has been reproduced this year by New York-based publishers Anthology Editions. JEB’s beautiful black and white photography, captured over the course of eight years, forms a visual archive of lesbians in the United States in the 1970s: the image-maker travelled across the country to document lesbians of all races, ages and backgrounds. The result is a powerful record of a moment in LGBTQ+ history when lesbians were far less represented. The 2021 edition of Eye to Eye also features text by artist and writer Tee Corinne, former athlete Lori Lindsey, and photographer Lola Flash.
